More Than Three Decades Behind the Music
Andy Sussman began working as a DJ assistant at just 13 years old. What started as a creative way to complete a school volunteer requirement quickly turned into his first paying job and the beginning of a lifelong career.
Over the years, Andy worked nearly every type of event imaginable. He performed at school dances, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, nightclubs, corporate events, and weddings. He learned to mix on turntables, worked as both a nightclub DJ and lighting operator, and developed an understanding of how music, timing, sound, and lighting work together to shape the energy of a room.
While attending Brandeis University, Andy worked at JAM’N 94.5 Boston as a Street Team DJ, mix-show assistant, and production assistant. He occasionally filled in on the station’s on-air mix shows and learned music programming, editing, commercial production, and audio production from some of Boston radio’s most respected professionals.
Believe it or not, Andy’s degree isn’t in music, broadcasting, or business. He earned a degree in Sociology, with a focus on sickness, health, and disabilities, and minored in Law, Medicine, and Health Policy. While his education gave him a deeper understanding of people and the different experiences that shape their lives, his passion was always motivating people and bringing them together through music.
That background still influences the way Andy performs today. He isn’t simply choosing songs from a playlist. He’s listening, mixing, watching the room, and constantly deciding where the celebration should go next.
The Beginning of TSG Weddings
In 2009, Andy founded TSG Weddings with a clear idea of the kind of company he wanted to build.
He wanted couples to receive personal service instead of being passed through a sales department. He wanted DJs who could genuinely mix music and read a dance floor. He wanted polished MC work without yelling, gimmicks, awkward games, or unnecessary time on the microphone.
Most importantly, he wanted couples to feel listened to and completely taken care of.
That philosophy continues to guide TSG Weddings today. Andy personally handles the initial conversations, learns what matters to each couple, and helps match them with the DJ who feels like the right fit. From there, their DJ takes the lead in planning the music, timeline, and flow of the wedding.
Andy remains closely involved behind the scenes throughout the entire process. He’s always available to offer ideas, answer questions, provide helpful suggestions, and keep couples organized and on track as the wedding approaches. Couples have the personal relationship and direct guidance of their DJ, along with the added support of an owner who remains invested in their experience from beginning to end.
TSG has grown carefully over the years, but Andy has always wanted the company to remain humble, personal, and small enough to give every couple individual attention. Growth has never been about becoming the biggest company. It has been about building the right team while preserving the communication, care, and personal service that TSG was founded on.
What It’s Like to Work With Andy
Couples often describe Andy as organized, responsive, patient, and easy to trust. He takes planning seriously because he knows that the work done before a wedding has a direct effect on how relaxed everyone feels when the day arrives.
Andy is a self-described Type A personality and a perfectionist. He pays attention to the smallest details because he knows they’re often the difference between a wedding that simply happens and one that feels effortless. He holds himself to an extremely high standard and wants every introduction, transition, song choice, and important moment to be handled exactly as it should be.
He’ll offer honest guidance when it’s helpful, explain the reasoning behind his recommendations, and listen when a couple has a different vision. He’s also comfortable adjusting when a timeline changes, a request is added, or something unexpected happens.
Andy doesn’t believe couples should have to manage their DJ on their wedding day. By that point, they should feel confident that he understands what matters to them and knows how to bring everything together.
It’s Andy’s job to execute the day flawlessly. His couples have one job: to live in the moment and enjoy every minute of one of the most meaningful days of their lives.
On the Dance Floor
Andy’s style is open-format and music-first. He mixes across genres and generations, combining current music, classics, throwbacks, and unexpected songs that make people look at each other and immediately head toward the dance floor.
He pays close attention to how guests respond. If something is working, he builds on it. If the room needs a change, he makes one. Requests and planning lists give him direction, but reading the people in front of him is what allows the night to feel natural instead of programmed.
Andy loves looking out at a packed dance floor, but filling the room is only part of what makes DJing special to him. He wants to take people on a journey through music, moving naturally between generations, genres, memories, and emotions.
Some of his favorite reactions happen when he plays a song people haven’t heard in years and they suddenly remember how much they loved it. You can see the recognition on their faces before they look at the people around them, sing every word, and make their way onto the dance floor. For Andy, creating those unexpected moments is one of the best parts of being a DJ.
Many couples say their dance floor stayed packed all night. Others remember that parents, grandparents, friends, and younger guests all felt included. That balance is something Andy takes tremendous pride in.
On the microphone, he’s polished, calm, and concise. Announcements are clear, names are pronounced correctly, and the focus always stays where it belongs: on the couple and the people celebrating with them.
The Person Behind the Company
Andy believes relationships are one of the most important parts of business. That belief came partly from watching his grandfather, a natural salesman who knew seemingly everyone but never made people feel pressured.
It also explains why Andy has always valued strong relationships with other wedding professionals and even competing DJ companies. He founded the Greater Boston Wedding DJs community as a place where local DJs could share ideas, discuss the industry, help one another, and continue learning.
He’s proud of the company he started, but even prouder of the people who helped build it. TSG Weddings isn’t meant to be a collection of interchangeable performers. It’s a close team of DJs who care about their couples, respect the responsibility they’ve been given, and share the same commitment to communication and professionalism.
Outside of weddings, Andy enjoys photography, technology, Boston sports, and trying new restaurants with his wife, Stephanie, and their son, Nate.
After more than three decades, he still genuinely loves DJing. He loves planning the moments, finding the right song at the right time, and watching a room full of people come together.
For Andy, that’s never gotten old.
